Francine Matthys (d. September 25, 2011)

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Francine Matthys died yesterday, Sunday the 25th of September in the afternoon. Francine was at home and surrounded and cared for by her loved ones. Francine was ill and she has fought the disease with a lot of courage and strength. Her condition deteriorated quickly last week and her death still came sudden.

Francine joined MSF in May 1985. Her first mission was in Chad and she later made missions in Mozambique, Ethiopia, Sudan, Angola and then again in Mozambique. She became director of the medical department in 1996, where she also worked for a shorter period in 1989 and as editor for the “Medical News” in 1991 to 1992. She left MSF in 2001 to work as scientific collaborator at the Institute of Public Health in Brussels, and in 2002 she took on a job as scientific collaborator at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp. She has been on the board of MSF Belgium from 2003 to 2006.

Francine was very dedicated in her work and to MSF, she had clear ideas and always wanted to move forward.
Francine leaves Pierre Poivre and 3 children - Victor, Hugo and Josephine behind, she was only 53 years old. She will be dearly missed, her contribution to medical humanitarian work will not be forgotten.
